What is Acupuncture ?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles in specific points on the body which helps to balance the flow of Qi in the body. It incorporates an integrated approach in the treatment of disease and the maintenance of health.
Does it hurt ?
Acupuncture needles are ultra fine unlike hypodermic needles and therefore there is virtually no pain on insertion. Sensations felt by patients of tingling, distention or heaviness either at the site of the needle or around the affected area are perfectly normal however. Most patients feel extremely relaxed both during and after treatment.
Is it safe ?
Acupuncture is extremely safe when carried out by a trained acupuncturist using sterile disposable needles. All the needles used at Newquay Acupuncture are the highest quality and of this type.
Are there side effects ?
Side effects which are harmful occur extremely rarely. Occasionally there may be very slight bruising which may occur at the site of needle insertion however this is not something which is a cause for concern.Â
How long are the treatments ?
The initial consultation and treatment can take up to one hour during which a complete medical history is taken and a Chinese medical diagnosis is made. An acupuncture treatment is typically given time allowing and if necessary a herbal prescription may be recommended.
Follow up visits take 30 - 45 minutes.
What do I need to do before coming for treatment ?
Before coming to the clinic try and have a light meal, drink some water and wear loose comfortable clothing if possible. If you are taking any prescriptions or supplements please bring the list with you to the clinic.
How many treatments will I need ?
The number of treatments required will vary depending on the patient as each person is unique with chronic conditions requiring more prolonged treatments compared to acute conditions. This will be discussed with you on your first visit in order to get the best results.
